Stay Safe During Your Ups and Downs

NJ TRANSIT always wants your travel experience on our system to be safe and enjoyable. That includes the use of elevators and escalators as you travel through our stations and terminals.

To help avoid injury, always be aware of your surroundings and be mindful of these elevator and escalator safety tips:

  • Do not place wheelchairs, strollers, walkers, scooters, bikes or other wheeled vehicles on an escalator; use an elevator.
  • Always face forward and use the handrail as you step onto a moving step.
  • Hold children, briefcases or small packages firmly with one hand.
  • Do not run up or down an escalator.
  • Do not sit or climb on a handrail.
  • Step promptly off the escalator when exiting; others may be behind you.
  • Use the emergency button only in emergency situations.
  • Keep shoelaces, drawstrings, scarves or other loose clothing clear of steps.

  • Stand aside for exiting passengers.
  • Do not try to stop a closing door.
  • Wait for the next car if the elevator is full.
  • After boarding an elevator, stand clear of the doors.
  • Push and hold the Door Open button, if needed, or ask someone to push it for you.
  • During an emergency, use the onboard phone or intercom system.
  • Never use an elevator if there is a fire in the building.
