NJ TRANSIT Rail Service for Christmas & New Year’s Holiday Weeks – Friday, December 23, 2022, to Monday, January 2, 2023
From Friday, December 23 through Monday, January 2, NJ TRANSIT Rail service will operate modified service on certain days and times as follows for the holiday season.
Customers are advised to carefully check Train Schedules for their specific lines.
SERVICE NOTES:
Early Getaway Service - Friday, December 23: Trains will operate on a weekday schedule on all lines with additional early getaway service from Penn Station New York, Newark Penn Station and Hoboken Terminal starting at 1PM on the Northeast Corridor (NEC), North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL), Raritan Valley Line (RVL), Morris & Essex Lines (M&E) and Port Jervis Line.
Northeast Corridor Early Getaway:
- Three extra trains will depart New York:
- Train 8849 at 2:04PM (skips Secaucus, express Newark Airport-New Brunswick)
- Train 8851 at 2:24PM (express Newark Airport-New Brunswick)
- Train 8855 at 3:24PM (express Newark Penn-Princeton Junction)
- Trains 3867 (5:25PM from New York) and 3961 (6:39PM from New York) will be cancelled.
North Jersey Coast Line Early Getaway:
- Three extra trains will depart New York:
- Train 8245 at 1:23PM (Express Newark Airport-Rahway, skips Avenel)
- Train 8249 at 2:34PM (Express Newark Airport-Woodbridge)
- Train 8353 at 3:13PM (Express Newark Penn-Woodbridge)
- Train 3373 (6:04PM from New York) will be cancelled.
Raritan Valley Line Early Getaway:
- Extra Train 8529 will depart Newark Penn at 3:34PM and make all stops to Raritan.
- Trains 5743 and 5445 will be combined as Train 8545, which will depart Newark at 6:33PM and will make all stops to High Bridge.
Morris & Essex Lines Early Getaway:
- Train 8935 will depart New York at 2:22PM and make all stops to Dover except Secaucus, East Orange, Highland Avenue, Mountain Station and Mount Tabor.
- Train 8941 will depart New York at 4:05PM and stop at South Orange, Maplewood, Summit, Chatham, Madison, Convent Station, Morristown, Morris Plains, Denville and Dover.
Main/Bergen County/Port Jervis Early Getaway:
- Train 49 (2:41PM departure from Hoboken and 2:52 PM from Secaucus) will continue to Otisville and Port Jervis this day (and be renumbered as Train 99).
- Train 59 (6:14PM departure from Hoboken and 6:25PM departure from Secaucus) will be cancelled.
Saturday, December 24 (Christmas Eve):
- Regular weekend schedules operate on ALL lines.
Sunday, December 25 (Christmas Day):
- Regular weekend schedules operate on ALL lines.
Monday, December 26:
- Trains will operate on an enhanced weekend schedule (same schedule as operated on Martin Luther King and Presidents’ Days) with additional trains during the morning and afternoon/evening peak periods. See shaded trains in timetables and printable schedules and check footnotes for operating dates.
Tuesday, December 27 to Friday, December 30:
- A modified weekday schedule operates, with additional mid-morning trains added on the NEC and NJCL and certain morning peak-period NEC trains cancelled. See shaded trains on the Weekday TO Newark/New York panels of the fanfold timetables and printer-friendly schedules for details.
Saturday, December 31 (New Year’s Eve):
- Trains will operate on a regular weekend schedule, with additional service in the afternoon and evening on the NEC, NJCL, RVL, M&E, Montclair, and Port Jervis Lines.

Sunday, January 1 (New Year’s Day):
- From midnight through approximately 6AM, additional late-night trains will operate on all rail lines except the Atlantic City Line.
- Additional trains will depart Penn Station New York, Hoboken, and Trenton, with connecting trains departing from Newark Broad Street, Summit and Long Branch through the early morning hours.
- Raritan Valley Line service operates from New York all night.
- NOTE: Several trains that normally operate between midnight and 1:30AM are canceled and replaced by later trains.
- After 6 AM, a regular weekend schedule operates on ALL lines.
- Meadowlands Rail Service operates for the Giants v. Colts 1PM football game.
Monday, January 2:
- Trains will operate on an enhanced weekend schedule (same schedule as operated on Martin Luther King and Presidents’ Days) with additional trains during the morning and afternoon/evening peak periods. See shaded trains in timetables and printable schedules and check footnotes for operating dates.
